Current Investment policies in Housing & Construction Sector of Pakistan have been tailor made to suit investor needs and have been consistent with liberalization, de-regulation, privatization, and facilitation being their foremost cornerstones. Pakistan ensures strong protection to foreign investors, as ranks 19th worldwide on protecting investors, (according to World Bank report “Doing Business In South Asia 2008”). It is worth mentioning that numerous foreign companies from Malaysia, South Korea, China, England, Singapore, Egypt, Oman, Saudi Arabia, UAE, Kuwait, etc. are currently operating in Housing & Construction Sector in Pakistan.

Among the 5 key reasons to invest in Pakistan are its Geo-Strategic Location, Trained Workforce, Investment Policies, Financial Markets and Economic Outlook. Today, Pakistan has over 170 million consumers with an ever growing middle class. Foreign Direct investment FDI has risen sharply from an average of $300 million in the 1990s to over $3.7 billion in 2008-09. And FOREX reserves have increased from $3.22 billion in 2000-01 to $11.6 billion in June 2009. Pertaining to the current Housing statistics in Pakistan, the scarcity backlog is over 8 Million housing units in 2010 and to wipe out the back log over 10 years, we need 1.3 Million housing units per year. The scenario creates an absolutely big investment & business opportunity for the int’l market.

The Government has initiated a number of key projects in Gwadar which would open new avenue for the economic development of Balochistan as well as Pakistan. Operation of Gwadar Port has already been awarded to Singapore Port Authority for 40 years. Some of the important projects initiated by the Government in Balochistan include construction of New Gwadar Airport, Gwadar-Khuzdar-Ratodero Highway, Saindak Copper / Gold Mine, Kutchi Canal, etc. while the Makran Coastal Highway, Gwadar Deap Sea Port & Mirani Dam have already been completed & commissioned. Work on Sonmiani Beach, (the 4th Port of Pakistan), and Extension of Coastal Highway from Gwadar upto Iranian Border have also been initiated. The progressive developments certainly pave way for the immense opportunity to invest in this region.

Build Asia Exhibition & Conference is an ideal opportunity for the participants from all over to display State-of-the-art Technological Advancements in Equipments, Materials, Services and Techniques in the related fields, vis-à-vis exhibiting all the top notch varieties in products & merchandises for the entrepreneurs. The magnificent Show indeed provides a promising platform for both participants and trade visitors to network under one roof, B2B brain drain, transfer of technologies etc. Most importantly, it would provide an opportunity for B2B alliances, leveraging their mutual strengths to the regional corporate world.

Since its inception in year 2005, Build Asia has attracted keen participation of more than 1,250 foreign delegates from 75 countries while, approx. 45,000 domestic delegates from both Government and Corporate sectors also grace the event every year to not only explore business and investment opportunities but also to encourage various Housing & Construction companies from the sector to partake in the Event and seize the opportunity.

In conjunction with Build Asia, Furniture Asia, aims to address a yet another potential sector for growth and investment. Government has set up a Sector Development Company on the recommendations of the Furniture Strategy Working Group “SWOG” to boost furniture industry. At present, quality furniture are being produced mainly at Chiniot, Gujrat, Peshawar, Rawalpindi and Karachi. Among the major participating bodies of this event are ACIMALL, Italy and All Pakistan Furniture Exporters Association, APFEA. Being an active and aggressive body they feel the dire need of promoting the local furniture industry for exports. Pakistan is independent in the industry of furniture in South Asia, thus it is proudly claimed that by exporting, the furniture industry would be generating a foreign exchange of US$ 1 billion initially, within a year. APFEA is hopeful that due facilitation and encouraging support to the artisans of Pakistan could enlighten the name of the Country worldwide and will subsequently bring about opportunities of employment too. Furniture Asia in conjunction with Build Asia Exhibition & Conferences aims at promoting & developing furniture industry to be transformed from cottage to a modern industry through enhancing its strengths and stressing on training, upgrading supplies and imports, and setting up a woodworking institute including testing labs of international standards in Pakistan.

Build Asia also incorporates Stonefair Asia to highlighting tremendous growth in the Industry as Pakistan has several rare species of marble, onyx, granite, etc of unmatchable quality in abundant quantities. Realizing its potential for exports, the Government of Pakistan has established a MARBLE CITY on 600 acres of land located at 7 kilometers from Hub on Hub-Gadani Road under Lasbela Industrial Estate Development Authority “LIEDA”. Presently, marble is being exported to USA, Italy, China, Middle and Far Eastern Countries etc. In the given scenario, overseas investors certainly have a unique opportunity to form joint ventures with local entrepreneurs to install state-of-the-art technology at MARBLE CITY to produce quality tiles, slabs and blocks at par with international standards for exports of this highly potential commodity, in great demand globally.

A Big player of the Int’l marble machinery manufacturers from Italy, Italian Marmomacchine Association “Confindustria Marmomacchine” also continues to support Build Asia. Moreover, Pakistan Stone Development Company, PASDEC endeavors to set up four marble cities besides setting up ten 10 quarries in various parts of the Country during next few years. The cities would be set up in FATA, Lora Lai, Risalpur and Chitral. Rich quality stone will be extracted from these quarries which would generate income of Rs.1b per month for the Country. The Ministry of Industries and Production would help expand the network in next ten years to exploit the potential of stone resources. Meanwhile, PASDEC has already made the Khuzdar quarry functional recently by importing latest machinery worth Rs.90 million from Italy which is being utilized to extract marble through modern techniques to save the losses. It is worth mentioning that earlier the marble was being sold at Rs.1500 per ton only but after the utilization of modern technology of extraction, the quantity has improved to the extent that 1 ton marble is now being sold at Rs. 7,000 locally where as the export quality marble would rate up to Rs.10,000 per ton.

In addition, Build Asia also features International Conferences every year, running concurrently with the Exhibition at the venue for Housing & Construction stakeholders on current issues.
